The 1997 NZ Nutrition Survey found that calcium was the most deficient bulk mineral in the NZ diet today. this was in all age groups, but especially teenagers and those over 50. Calcium is believed to be even more deficient now, as a 2002 survey of NZ children found 45.2% of some female children had an inadequate calcium intake. This is mostly due to the lower level of calcium in foods nowadays which is believed to be the result of the use of acid chemical fertilisers which lock up calcium in the soil. This is a problem throughout the Western world. Dr Edmond de Vroey reported in 2001, using US Dept of Agriculture food data, “Crops have lost on average 39.37% of their content in calcium (since 1963).” However, just one Coral C capsule a day, containing 500 mg of highly absorbable coral calcium can supply this lacking mineral. The study used 58 elderly hospitalised women (average age 80) to test the effectiveness of marine-based calcium over traditional dolomite type calcium. In the study the 58 elderly women were divided into three groups, Group A, Group B and Group C. The spine and hip bone densities of all the women were measured before the study. Group A received 900 mg daily of marine calcium (similar to coral calcium, but derived from oyster shell). Group B received 900 mg daily of standard dolomite type calcium from limestone rock. (Most supplement calciums are this type.) Group C were put on a placebo (ie, a dummy, zero calcium capsule) and so received no extra calcium other than that supplied from the standard hospital diet. The results of the study Group C, who remained on the standard hospital diet (estimated to be about 600 mg per day of calcium) decreased in their bone density, after 18 months by a huge 9%. It should be remembered however, that these were elderly, hospitalised women who were not exercising. Lack of any exercise can greatly accelerate bone calcium loss. Group B, on the dolomite type calcium, retained their initial hip bone density. There was a slight drop, but within the margin of error. Group A, on the marine calcium, increased their bone density by an average of 6%. This was an amazing and unexpected find. The results are depicted in graph form below. Unexpected fat loss reported Another unexpected benefit reported for these Group A women on the marine calcium, was less fat build up, or as the research doctors put it, "increase of fat content was significantly inhibited in group A." This finding ties in strongly with a recent land mark, mice experiment at the University of Tennessee. In the experiment, a group of mice were fed a high-fat, high-sugar diet for six weeks. All gained a 27% increase in body fat. The mice were then switched to a low calorie diet. Part of the group were also given a non-fat, dairy calcium supplement (the same type of calcium found in Coral C). This calcium-supplemented group had an incredible 69% decrease in body fat. Whereas the mice without the calcium supplement, but on the same low calorie diet, had only an 8% decrease in body fat. "The effect is very significant, much more than we imagined it would be," says Dr Michael Zemel, PhD, director of the Nutrition Institute at the University.
